CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Connie Maheswaran
Age: 11
Canon: Steven Universe
Canon Point: We Need To Talk
Character Information: Connie @ the Steven Universe Wikia!
Personality:
Connie is a sheltered girl. Her parents are very strict, and have very intense rules about everything. They care a lot about appearances, health, and safety, and Connie gets caught up in that. She spends a lot of time worrying about what her parents might think about everything, and she's very obedient.
Well, to their faces. Connie is a firm believer that what her parents don't know won't hurt them, so while it sometimes may seem like they have superpowers and could instantly tell when she's disobeying them, she doesn't want to sacrifice the things she cares about. Things like Steven, her magical friend, and his magical destiny-filled life. Things the Maheswarans would definitely frown upon, were they to know. She keeps things like the fact that her eyes were healed and she no longer needs glasses hidden by popping out the lenses in her glasses, and the fact that she is able to fuse with Steven is a secret kept from everyone but Greg and the gems. Connie is absolutely thrilled by Steven's life, full of things she previously could only imagine in her head while reading her beloved books, and when fantastical things happen she's not scared or put off, but absolutely thrilled.
It's come to a point now that Connie wants to get more involved in Steven's life, partly because he's her only friend and she cares a lot about his wellbeing, but also because she wants to live in a fantastical sort of way, rather than being stuck as a normal human with a normal boring life. But she definitely does care a lot about Steven, and worries for him. He's her first and only friend, and Connie has lived a lonely life up until meeting him.
Not only does her family move around a lot, but she's shy and reserved, and not confident in herself at all, so she hasn't been able to make a friend on her own. Even Steven sort of fell onto her lap by chance, and she cherishes him for it.
But even though she's shy, when she gets comfortable she gets excitable and even silly, able to act like any happy kid her age would. She especially gets excited about the things she cares about, which are books that can make her feel like she's in a far away, fantastical place. She especially seems interested and passionate about her favorite book series, Unfamiliar Familiar, which has a lot of anti-authoritarian themes that she places a lot of value in. It is telling that she cares so much about them to even disagree with the typical, crowd-pleasing ending that isn't as subversive as the rest of the books -- but, meanwhile, she has a lot of respect for authority in real life, such as her parents, but also any adult. But the way that she sneaks around her parents' rules while they're not around, and especially when her first reaction to her parents finding out she's been lying to them is to get on a bus and run away with Steven, it's clear that she does actually have some desire to be less obedient and more rebellious.
The only thing is, she's scared of the consequences. Connie tends to take the easier, less scary and unsure way when dealing with problems, which culminates in how she deals with telling her parents about her adventures -- or, rather, not telling them. She even goes so far to, at first, lie outright to them and tell them that Steven is a normal kid with a normal, nuclear family, just because it's easier to explain than the truth. And because she won't have to worry about what they'll think about him if they find out he's not normal, and his family is the furthest thing from nuclear. She explains to Steven that she's not ashamed of him, she's only scared of what her family will think, and lying or hiding the truth is easier to her than explaining and dealing with the consequences of the truth. She's scared, most of all, of losing her beloved friend.
One side effect of being so into books is that she's very, well, book-smart. She knows a lot of useless facts and information about things, but, thanks to not having friends most of her life, she doesn't really read people well. She tends to take things people say at face value, especially if they're in an authority position. She's not used to having friends, so she doesn't pick up on tells like when Steven wants to talk to her about something important, but hard to say, or if he's hiding something from her (and he's not exactly the best at lying). She doesn't really do reading body language. The only time she'll really doubt someone's word is when they say something she doesn't want to be true, like when Steven said he didn't want to be friends anymore.
But Connie is a very good listener and attentive friend, probably also as a result of not having many friends. She puts extra care into the one friendship she has because she doesn't want to lose it. She goes the extra mile to protect her friend and make sure he's okay, worrying over him and acting as his shoulder if he needs someone to lean on. She even learns swordsmanship from Pearl so she can fight together with him when he comes up against battles. She hasn't had hands-on experience yet, but she has a lot of practice, and together she and Steven can take on anything.
